SIR John Major accused Tory MPs and Thatcherite Jacob Rees-Mogg of destroying Margaret Thatcher’s legacy. Without naming names, the former prime minister also made a sly dig at other top Tories Boris Johnson and David Davis saying that they are trying to “undo her greatest triumph” by campaigning to take Britain out of the single market.
Sir John told an audience at the Politics Festival: “Unless my memory fails me, one of Margaret Thatcher’s greatest achievements was to take us into the single market. “It now seems to be the position of those people who advertise themselves as close supporters of Margaret, indeed her standard bearers [they] are actually trying to take us out of the single market.”
Sir John didn’t specify names but Mr Rees-Mogg, Mr Johnson and Mr Davis have been loud supporters of leaving the single market. Read the full article here
