Holland’s PM Mark Rutte says voters in other countries won’t vote to leave the EU because it will hit them in the pocket

HOLLAND’S prime minister has said voters in other countries don’t want to leave the EU because they see Brexit hitting Brits in the pocket.

Mark Rutte cited estimates by the Bank of England that show the decision to quit the bloc has cost the average UK household £900 already.

He quoted the figure, produced by governor Mark Carney last month, during an exchange with Ukip leader Gerard Batten at the European Parliament yesterday.

The liberal PM said: “That is the cost at the moment already that British families are incurring and that will rise.

“I’ve found in the Netherlands that this fact, but also the fact that it’s hurting our collective security, is the best argument why the others need to work more closely together.

“So in that sense thank you for that, but I’m still very pessimistic, very sombre about the fact that you’re leaving the EU.”

The Dutch premier also said his country was “fairly and squarely” behind Michel Barnier and called for more UK “clarity” on the Irish border.

He said: “It has to be sorted, otherwise I’m really worried about what will happen in March next year.”
